Conditionals

In this entry it will explain how the First and Second conditionals are formed, and when to use them.

Conditionals have 2 parts: an if clause and a main clause.

Note: When the if clause comes first we use a comma between the clausesm but If the "if clause" comes second, there is no need for a comma.
   1) If you press this button, the windows opens.
                 If Clause                   Main Clause

                                    OR

The window opens if you press this button.
                Main Clause                 If Clause

      2) If you freeze water, it turns into ice.
             If Clause               Main Clause

                               OR

It turns into ice if you freeze water.
            Main Clause           If Clause

      3) We will be later if you get up early.
           Main Clause        If Clause

                              OR
If you get up early, we will be late.
           If Clause              Main Clause

With the knows delivered above, you'll can understand the First Conditional.

I. First Conditional: The first conditional (also called conditional type 1) is a structure used for talking about possibilities in the present or in the future.
A first conditional sentence consists of two clauses, an "if" clause and a main clause:

Example:
If you study hard, you will pass the final exam.
     If Clause                Main Clause
Note: If  the "if clause" comes first, a comma is usually used. If the "if clause" comes second, there is no need for a comma. Example:

You will pass the final exam if you study hard.
           Main clause                        If clause

Examples using the first conditional:

a) If it's sunny, we'll go to the park. Maybe it will be sunny — that's possible.
b) Paula will be sad if Juan leaves. Maybe Juan will leave — that's possible.
c) If you cook the supper, I'll wash the dishes. Maybe you will cook the supper — that's possible.

Notes about first conditional:

The 'if' clause can be used with different present forms.
  • If I go to New York again, I'll buy you a souvenir from the Empire State Building.
  • If he's feeling better, he'll come.
  • If she hasn't heard the bad news yet, I'll tell her.
The "future clause" can contain 'going to' or the future perfect as well as 'will'.
  • If I see him, I'm going to tell him exactly how angry I am.
  • If we don't get the contract, we'll have wasted a lot of time and money.
The "future clause" can also contain other modal verbs such as 'can' and 'must'.
  • If you go to New York, you must have the cheesecake in Lindy's.
  • If he comes, you can get a lift home with him.

II. Second Conditional: Unreal possibility or dream

The second conditional is like the first conditional. We are still thinking about the future. We are thinking about a particular condition in the future, and the result of this condition. But there is not a real possibility that this condition will happen. For example, you do not have a lottery ticket. Is it possible to win? No! No lottery ticket, no win! But maybe you will buy a lottery ticket in the future. So you can think about winning in the future, like a dream. It's not very real, but it's still possible.

IFconditionresult
past simpleWOULD + base verb
IfI won the lotteryI would buy a car.

Notice that we are thinking about a future condition. We use the past simple tense to talk about the future condition. We use WOULD + base verb to talk about the future result. The important thing about the second conditional is that there is an unreal possibility that the condition will happen.
Here are some more examples:
IFconditionresult
past simpleWOULD + base verb
IfI married MaryI would be happy.
IfRam became richshe would marry him.
Ifit snowed next Julywould you be surprised?
Ifit snowed next Julywhat would you do?

Note about Second Conditional:
Sometimes, we use shouldcould or might instead of would, for example: If I won a million dollars, I could stop
working.

News

"University of Chile F.C lost its unbeaten but can win the tournament yet".

The blues lost 2-1 the match against Catholic University F.C and the blues didn´t lose since July 13th and they will face with Cobreloa F.C to be the winners of the tournament. Eduardo Vargas, the soccer player of the moment won't play the match because he was expelled.

It was a hard mision to Catholic University FC because the crusaders lost 2-1 the first semi-final in San Carlos de Apoquindo and they required win by two goals of difference. Also, the coach Mario Lepe had to use reserves to make the squad.

In the soccer field, both teams entered lazy. The blues didn´t have the offensive kind of play that they had in the first semester, but the crusaders neither did something better and you could see that they missed some soccer players.

When the first half of the match was finishing Felipe Gutierrez put a pass for Kevin Harbottle, who beat Jhonny Herrera and Kevin could open the scoreboard.

In the second half of the match increased the Crusader's hopes. In the 53-minute, Eduardo Vargas was expelled because he strongly demanded against the referee, therefore Vargas will lose the first match against Cobreloa.

After that, 6 minutes later Osvaldo Gonzalez made a violent shot since 35 meters and finished with the crusader's hopes, who after the draw try to obtain another goal but, once more without new ideas again.

They obtained this goal in the 91-minute by José Luis Villanueva, although it was so late to try to obtain another goal.

Finally, the Catholic University stole the undefeated Blues but the Sampaoli's team got the pass to the next phase and now they'll try obtaining the third reward of the year.

Comment: I watched the match and it was amused and if I had to say that who played better I’d say that one half to each team because the first half it was to the crusaders, but in the half time the blues redesigned his kind of play and got a very good second half. However, I think that University of Chile could get a victory if Eduardo Vargas had not been expulsed. There we could saw that his young age played against him because the reason of his expel it was stupid. By the way, University of Chile it isn't my favorite soccer team, but it was a interesting match.

Pierre David Guetta

Better known by his stage name David Guetta, he was born November 7, 1967. He is a French house music producer and DJ, but to reach his current fame he had to live many experiences. At age 17, Guetta began DJing at the Broad Club in Paris He first played popular songs, and he discovered house music when he heard a Farley master Funk, track that changed his life. Later he began hosting his own club nights and then released "Nation Rap", a hip-hop collaboration with French rapper Sidney Duteil. Then, in 1994 he released another collaboration with American house vocalist Robert Owens titled "Up & Away", that was a minor club hit. However, some years later he created his first hit single, "Just a Little More Love", featuring American singer Chris Willis. In 2002 Guetta debuted with his album "Just a Little More Love" on Virgin Records and sold over 300,000 copies and the most popular singles were: "Love Don't Let Me Go", "People Come People Go" and "Give Me Something".

In 2007 Guetta released his third album called "Pop Life" and it was successful in the UK and Ireland as well as in mainland Europe. According to EMI in 2010, the album has sold a total of 530,000 copies worldwide. The lead single "Love Is Gone" reached Number 1 on the American Dance Chart. Also, In 2009, he was placed third in the "Top 100 DJs" poll by DJ Magazine and was elected "Best House DJ" by DJ Awards in 2008.

In 2009 he released his fourth album called "One Love" and his single "When Love Takes Over", which featured Kelly Rowland, peaked at #1 on the UK Singles Chart and topped many other countries. Another successful sigle it was "Sexy Bitch" (censured as Sexy Chick) featuring Akon, became his second #1 in the UK and I think that is his best song.
